Description
The year is Universal Century 0080. The great war between the Earth Federation and the Duchy of Zeon is almost over. At the neutral space colony of Libot, the Federation secretly constructs a powerful new Gundam mobile suit. And in this colony, so far untouched by the conflict, a little boy named Al dreams of mobile suits and space battles...until a Zeon commando team discovers Libot's secret, and changes Al's life forever.

5 out of 5 stars Simply beautiful   October 28, 1999

I first encountered gundam almost 13 years ago at a book store where they had, sitting in the sci fi section all 3 of the original novels that gundam is based off of, translated for the first time into english from their native japanese. That was the start for me. 3 years later saw into my possesion a grimyu 4th generation copy of all 6 episodes of 0080 and all 13 of 0083. I am very pleased to finally see the domestic US release of one of the most sought after anime titles.

0080 is the story of a young boy on one of the many colonies caught up in the war between the Zeon Archduchy and the earth federation. He loves and is fascinated by mobile suits, the giant war mecha used by both sides to wage their battles. One day he encounters Bernie, a young Zeon pilot who crashes in the colony during a battle. The story is about his relationshipo with this "enemy" soldier, his childhood friend Chris, a test pilot returned from earth, and how the war and his expieriences change him. Very cute, with some stunning battle sequences between Bernie and Chris.

0083 is stunning, harsh, and gritty, revolving around a 3 people: Anavel Gatou, ace pilot and commander of the Zion forces, Kou, the experimental unit01 gundam pilot, and Nina, creator of the top secret Gundam's unit 01 and the megalithic unit 02.

Gato and Nina shared a relationship for sometime, and then he betrayed Nina to steal unit 02 for the Zion forces, as well as it's Nuclear arsenal. Kou, in unit 01, sets out to stop him, starting off the series with a bang. From there it ranges into the "one year war", a topic which is covered by much of the gunadam series, like "the 08th MS team", "Gundam 0079",and "Nu Gundam".

The story is gritty, with some awesome mecha battle sequences. Much akin to the american Starwars series, I highly reccomend this to all animation fans, be the Anime, sci-fi, or traditional, old and young alike. Easily worth you money!

5 out of 5 stars A must-have collection   August 6, 1999

For anyone that loves animation, be it Disney or Anime, this collection is a milestone. Stunning scenes, fast-paced action, deep-reaching story background, and superb storytelling. The box contains 6 tapes (not 4), two are the four episodes of Gundam 0080, the other four contain the 13 episodes of Gundam 0083. The quality is excellent, audio is HI-FI and the subtitles are state-of-the-art.

The story: If you have seen the classic 0079 series, then you are at home here, if you doesn't, buy the 3-movies box at Amazon, and get you up-to-date. Mobile Suit Gundam is definitely not for children, unless you want to teach them what war means. You will not find hyper-villans here, and the heroes are not so cristalline. Anyone has a personal history, and in his prospective he is perfectly right in what he is doing, and even the 'good-ones' have black spots. The mobile suits (robots, if you prefer) are simply machines, that need ammunition, energy, have a mass, broke up, unlike immortal Mazingas or Goldrakes. The story is about people, about ideals, about the atrocity of war.

Gundam 0080 is about a kid, fascinated by mobile suits, that gets involved in a minor skirmish, and tells how this changes him and his perception of the war. Simply touching.

Gundam 0083 is a epic story, you cannot even figure what is to happen at any minute. Here are seen the gigantic space colonies, in all their massive size, along that tiny starships and mobile suits. Great characters, great story, and an astonishing gran-finale.

Simply put, once you seen one, you'll want to have 'm all.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful nostalgia   June 28, 2000

Gundam animation series has been around for more than decades. I was a huge fan of it when I was growing up. Fortunately, I was able to hear about this newer series of Gundam recently and decided to try it. I loved it. It was very entertaining itself but also it brought all the nostalgia of my childhood. However, this series is for mature audiences since it containes a heaviely political and dramatic story line. It is quite hard to believe that these visually beautiful animation was actually produced about a decade ago. I believe this animation series containes the serious and original atmosphere of the Gundam series not like those new series such as gundam wings. Regardless of the fact that you know about Gundam or not, you will be highly entertained.
