Amazon.com The artificial humans 17 and 18 who terrorized Earth in Season #4 of Dragon Ball Z were only a preliminary threat: Dr. Gero's ultimate creation, Cell, strikes in Season #5. A bio-entity created from genetic material taken from Goku, Piccolo, Vegeta, and Frieza, Cell arrives via the time capsule Bulma built for Trunks. (There are now two of them, somehow.) Although he defeats the merged Piccolo and Kami, Cell remains imprisoned in his "imperfect form," a sort of larval stage. Until he absorbs androids 17 and 18, he can't attain his ultimate power. Vegeta and Trunks train in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber at Kami's palace, which enables them to undergo the equivalent of a year's heavy workouts at high gravity in one day. Transcending his powers as a Super Saiyan, Vegeta clobbers Cell. When Cell challenges Vegeta to fight his perfect form. Vegeta takes the bait and allows Cell to evolve. The perfect Cell proves so powerful, Trunks has to draw on untapped reserves of power to save Vegeta. Goku plays only a small role in Season #5: he spends the first episodes recovering from the heart virus, then waiting with Gohan for the Hyperbolic Chamber or training in it. One of best-loved stories in the Dragon Ball Z continuity the "Cell Saga" offers plenty of action, with characters punching each other through rock walls and destroying entire islands as they fight. But it ends on a weak note when, instead of killing Trunks, Cell challenges the Z Fighters to a martial arts tournament--the focus of Season #6. The paradoxes of the time travel story, including adult Trunks encountering himself as a baby, don't seem to bother the fans--or the writers. These 26 episodes could have easily fit on five discs or even four, and spreading them over six feels chintzy.(Rated TV PG. suitable for ages 8 and older: violence, tobacco use, ethnic stereotypes) --Charles Solomon

Another excellent season set March 1, 2008 Taylor X (Las Vegas, NV (USA)) 35 out of 42 found this review helpful
Dragon Ball Z is the one greatest anime series ever created. With its action-packed universe and compelling storylines, Akira Toriyama's magnum opus has never failed to please. This is the latest season set FUNimation has released of the series.
This set picks up where the last one left off. The Z-Fighters, in addition to having to put up with the newfound threat from Dr. Gero's Androids, makes an unwelcome discovery. An exact duplicate of the time machine Trunks came to the present-day timeline in has been discovered, along with a mysterious egg. Before long, the Z-Fighters are face-to-face with a threat even more dangerous than the Androids - Cell. Another Dr. Gero creation, Cell is a semi-organic creature also made by Dr. Gero, using biological samples taken from the Z-Fighters, and a few of their old foes as well. And with each human being he absorbs and kills, he gains more powerful. He is on a quest to find the other Androids, as absorbing them will greatly increase his power, and allow him to transform to even more powerful states. Now the Z-Fighters have not one menace on their hand, but two.
The DVD set is divided amongst six discs, and contains the complete Imperfect and Perfect Cell Sagas (though curiously, not the Cell Games saga.) The picture has been subjected to digital noise reduction, and the set includes a booklet of character profiles and episode listings.
Obviously, if you're new to Dragon Ball Z, you'll want to start with the Season One box set, but if you're already a fan, you'll enjoy these episodes. You had to endure numerous episodes that dragged on in the previous set, often with minimal action. But here's where enduring the weaknesses of the previous season pays off. With considerably more action and battles, the Cell Saga is this reviewer's personal favorite part of the Z series. The plots and characters get all the more interesting, making for some of the finest battles the series has to offer. But disappointingly, the set has fewer than 30 episodes, and doesn't wrap up the Cell Saga, instead ending right before the "10 days before the Cell Games" episodes.
One of my personal favorite features of the set is the Marathon feature. FUNimation includes a feature in these sets that allows you to view all of the episodes on each disc from start to end with no interruptions from intros/outros/recaps/etc. This is an extremely handy feature I wish more TV shows on DVD had.
Like earlier Dragon Ball Z season sets, the picture has been cropped at the top and bottom (this was done due to excessive grain and damage to the original source), and it has been subjected to the digital noise reduction process. Obviously a lot of fans, myself included, were disappointed to see the picture get cropped. While the digital noise reduction doesn't do as thorough a job cleaning up the image as you'd hope, it IS the best these episodes have ever looked. In other words, it's a "give and take" scenario. You lose some of the picture you could see on earlier full-frame DVDs, but on the good side, the image quality is superior to all earlier DVD releases.
Sound quality is similar to the earlier sets. English audio quality is fantastic, but the dub is still translated poorly and the voice cast is hit and miss. On the other hand, the Japanese audio quality is poor, showing its age, but it does feature a well-translated subtitle track from Steven J. Simmons that lets you experience the series as originally intended.
Additionally, like the earlier sets, you have the option of watching the English voice cast played against the original Japanese audio.
No special features are included here unless you count the trailers and the same textless opening/closing sequence all other sets like this have had. On the good side, the set does include a booklet similar to the earlier sets, with character profiles and an episode guide, making it handy to go right where you need to go on the DVDs.
It's another great Dragon Ball Z season set, enough said. Easily some of the best material in the entire series. If you're a fan of the series and don't already have these episodes, you can get them all here for one low price. Cropping issues aside, this is a great set, and a good value, especially compared to the older DVD releases.

6 discs for 26 episodes plus higher price!!! March 31, 2008 S. Mcdonald (Mt. Washington, KY) 2 out of 7 found this review helpful
There putting out less episodes per set and on the same number of discs. Looks like only 4 or 5 episodes will be on each disc for this set. Why not do a 4 disc set and make it cheaper? I bet the next set will have 3 episodes per disc. Great show though!
I give this set five stars! March 3, 2008 Matthew 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is probobly one of the more action packed boxes you will find. My only complaint is the fact that it has less than 30 episodes, but its understandable. Like the previous boxsets, it is completely uncut and remastered, and still has 3 audio options. but honestly, would it kill funimation to have some actuall dvd extras? trailers are fine, but interviews with the voice actors would be nice, or some old toonami promos would be even better! once again the image is cropped, which you would only notice if youve seen the episodes previously and are very familiar with the product. if your new to dbz, you probobly wouldnt notice that the feet and hair is cut off. but i will continue to buy these boxsets, and i definitly reccomend buying it, if your new to dbz though you should get the first season first. but you owe it to yourself to buy these action packed episodes!
