Solid Anime for the most part. October 2, 2008 Just some old guy. (Wa State) 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
While it starts out well enough, at times it drags forward. Yet there are two episodes that are just retarded. 1 is "The girl with a Smile" and the other is "The Nightmare Quiz show"...I think that is what they are both called. Those two episodes could have been cut out completely and the story would not suffer at all. This centers around 3 individuals...Vincent Law,who is a Proxy but chose to block all of his memories from his past for some reason. That is what this is about...Vincent is trying to find out why he has no memories past a certain point in his life. Another Character is Re-l Mayer who is not the most likeable person till later in the story. Re-l is hunting Vincent but becomes just as intrigued in his past as Vincent himself. When Re-l catches up with Vincent she agrees not to kill him until after they find out more about his past. The most likeable character is "Pino" whom is a child like "Companion model-Auto Rave" (android) who is infected with a virus that allows her to have a soul and make her own decisions instead of following the commands of others. The setting is in an apocolyptic world where people live in domes because they are told they can not survive in the outside world. Proxys were at one time looked upon as Gods and without a Proxy a city can not surivive and of course Vincents quest to regain his memories takes him into the outside world along with Pino & Re-l. I hate telling the whole story to someone...just read the product review for that. Three stars was to little to give this.....and four stars is a little to much. However I did enjoy this it just that it will take some time before I will watch it again...replay value is so-so.
"Its over... My life is over." October 28, 2008 M. Randall (Allen Park, MI) Pretty much the perfect anime in my opinion. Unique story, dark setting, great soundtrack and original characters. I've owned the individual DVDs of Ergo Proxy for awhile now but i decided to upgrade to this slimmer, boxset when it was released and sell off my older versions. Whats nice about this boxset is that it even includes the bonus DVD that was only available in the initial limited edition of volume one back in 2006. Fans of cyper-punk and psychological animes should certainly apply.
The Distant Bleak Future November 11, 2008 Z. Burch (Albuquerque, NM) I am not an Anime guru by any means. I do have several degrees in the Fine and Visual Arts, which makes me about as knowledgeable as the next guy, art is such a subjective topic. But, as a professional of the field I must say the artistic palette and visual style of Ergo Proxy is very appealing and consistent (even though the character Re-l has a strong resemblance to Evanescence's Amy Lee). But like all good animation, it doesn't amount to anything if the story is not there. Ergo Proxy, starts weak, there are moments when you can tell tension and mystery are trying to build but as a viewer you recognize the cliche early on and instead of a building emotion you feel rather dry. The story really takes off halfway through disk two (I don't want to spoil anything). From there it becomes a rather fun, dark, if not bleak outlook on the future. Ergo Proxy is good at playing with recognizable themes, and making them its own. Overall, the adventure is worth the price of admission and recommended for any sci-fi fan.
