The second season of the wildly popular Dragon Ball Z comprises the "Namek" and "Captain Ginyu" sagas. Gohan, Krillin, and Bulma travel to the planet Namek to find an even more powerful set of Dragon Balls that can restore the lives of Tenshinhan, Yamucha, Chaozu and Piccolo, who were killed by Vegeta during the first season. (Their souls continue to train with King Kai in the Other World.) All is not well on Namek: the arch-villain Frieza, who looks and sounds a bit like Truman Capote, also desires the Dragon Balls. If he uses them to obtain eternal life, he'll rule the universe forever. With a cadre of lieutenants that includes Vegeta, he slaughters the Namekians to gain the supernatural orbs. After his injuries have been healed by a magic senzu bean, Goku heads to Namek. En route, he trains at 100 gravities, raising his powers enormously. Vegeta believes Goku may be the legendary Super Saiyan that appears once a millennium--except he lacks the requisite love of battle. This version of Goku is less aggressive, and he uncharacteristically uses his brain (never his greatest asset) to defeat Ginyu, Frieza's second-in-command. Unlike Season 1--Vegeta Saga, Season 2ends on a cliff-hanger. Skeptics may find Goku's adventures needlessly protracted, over the top, and even silly. But for millions of boys, they provide the special blend of comradeship, martial arts training, and take-no-prisoners battles they love. The newly remastered edition includes the original Japanese dialogue for the first time. (Rated TV PG. suitable for ages 8 and older: violence, minor risque humor, brief nudity, tobacco and alcohol use) --Charles Solomon

5 out of 5 stars My favorite season   March 7, 2007

This season had more character building covering the best support cast the show had. Kurririn and Gohan faced the ruler of the universe's army, and somehow helped start Vegita's turn to g...not as evil. The following seasons were more flashy, but not necessarily more ambitious.

4 out of 5 stars If you love DBZ then get this.   May 24, 2007

My 4 stars has nothing to do with this series being in the wide screen format or any of the other problems that seem to be the focus of many people's complaints, but hey you cant satisfy everybody. My problem is the same thing that plagues all DBZ. Too many filler episodes and very long scenes. And there is a few in this. Honestly the Namek Saga is my 3rd least favorite saga right behind Garlic Junior and the Great Saiyaman. However due to the added footage and non edited scenes, I appreciate this saga a lot more. Anyway, I'm watching DBZ happily with all the blood and very violent dialogue it was always meant to have. This collection makes me completely forget about the edited pioneer versions which absolutely sucks. This collection contains the complete Namek saga also to include the Captain Ginyu Saga as well, episodes 40-74. I really do appreciate the Marathon option for the simple fact I dont see the point behind the whole "next episode" when I'm about to watch it in like 5 seconds. The one thing I'm really disappointed about is the packaging. I really hate the dvd overlapped formation. Single thin -pack cases would have worked great. As far as I'm concerned my DBZ collection is officially complete until something brand new arises. If you love DBZ then get this. If your new to it, get and see for yourself why the fan base for this epic series is so huge. I was a late bloomer to DBZ, and I asked myself why did I put it off for so long?

I'll give Funimation credit on one thing, and that is the restoration and preservation of this series. Since I'm an anime purist, this goes against everything that the series has come to be. That's the same as cropping a series like Neon Genesis Evangelion. I mean who would do that? It's one of those ideas that wasn't thought out too well. I mean they should've just released it in 4:3 and let the watcher decide if they want to see it cut off because that is possible with the proper settings, but no choice was given so I'm highly disappointed with this release as I am glad that I at least got a chance to enjoy it for what it was; a chopped classic. I will also agree that it is very claustraphobic which means it wasn't what the artist indended in the first place.

I can't wait for this to come out. I just hope Funanimation bring us all the episodes of the series in this format. I was waiting for ages to see this product come out and finally my wish comes true. Go Dragonball Z you will never die because you fans will always have a piece of your history in their hearts, just like me.
