Amazon.com The new Eva Unit 03, piloted by Shinji's friend Toji, mutates during its initial test and becomes an Angel. When Shinji realizes another human being is inside the menace, he refuses to attack it. Using an override circuit, Shinji's father takes control of his Eva and rips the 03 apart. Horrified and disgusted at this brutality, Shinji quits as an Eva pilot--until a new and more powerful Angel strikes at NERV headquarters. Seeing his friends Asuka and Rei overcome, Shinji returns to defeat the deadly new foe. But his Eva goes berserk, attacking and devouring the Angel. As it grows in power, the Eva partially absorbs its pilot. Drifting through semiconsciousness, Shinji confronts memories that recur in variations, like an aria by Philip Glass. Characters in other, popular mecha series never confront these moral dilemmas. The youthful pilots in Gundam Wing adhere to a warrior code that extols heroism; they have few qualms about slaughtering their foes. Shinji knows that warfare is not a noble calling, and that causing the death of a human being is a horrifying prospect. His ambivalence about his role as a pilot forces him to analyze his troubled relationship with his remote and brutal father and how that relationship has warped his self-perception. Episodes: 18. "The Judgment of Life," 19. "A Man's Fight," 20. "Form of the Mind, Form of the Man." Not rated; suitable for ages 14 and up for robot versus robot violence, nudity, minor profanity, and sexual situations. --Charles Solomon

Evangelion starts to heat up in Volume 6 April 12, 2001 14 out of 19 found this review helpful
Up to this point in the series, Evangelion was, at most, fairly serious. During the first several volumes and episodes, the plot was a mixture of comedy and action. As the story starts to unfold, the plot slowly becomes darker-- Volume 6 is where it becomes apperant that this is change is permanent. In episode 18, Toji has been seleceted as the fourth child, although Shinji is yet unaware. An angel that has been sleeping inside of Toji's EVA for some time awakens during an activation test with Toji still inside, and NERV calls in Units 00, 01 and 02 to destroy it. It is a very important episode in which many important plot details are explained, including foreshadowing into what EVA really is. Episode 19 is one of the most important episodes in the series, finally revealing to us what EVA is, and what a bombshell it is. After his father forces him to nearly kill Toji, Shinji quits NERV. Meanwhile, the 14th angel attacks and Units 00 and 02 are no match for it alone. Shinji has no choice but to return. But during the battle, something horrifying happens... In Episode 20, the aftermath of the previous battle leaves Shinji with a 400% sync rate and his soul absorbed into Unit 01. Now it's a race for time to get him out...
Neon Genesis Evangelion keeps on getting better and better March 20, 2001 11 out of 17 found this review helpful
The first test of the new Eva turns into a disaster as the giant bio-humanoid goes insane and proceeds to create havoc among the city! When the combined efforts of Asuka and Rei fail to stop the berserk monster, it is all up to Shinji to fight it alone in Unit 01. But his sympathy for the fellow pilot trapped inside the beast becomes his undoing! As Gendo unleashes the monstrous power of Unit 01's auto-pilot, it becomes horribly clear that the Evas are far more than just machines.
False labels February 26, 2005 Dr. Christian Troy (Davenport, IA) 11 out of 12 found this review helpful
The last couple Eva Platinum DVDs have been falsely labeled. In the review it says that Episodes 18-20 are on this disc, while in reality they are on disc 5. The episodes on this disc are 21, 22, and 23. Don't get me wrong, the reviews are great. They're just for the wrong disc. Maybe Amazon will catch the error and fix it. Maybe.
Here we go! April 2, 2001 Godzilla (Henderson, Nevada United States) 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
Okay people, for those of you who don't know already, this is where the the proverbial poop hits the fan, and let me tell ya, it hits hard. For those of you who thought Eva was some kinda kiddie mecha action show, this is where you get proven wrong. All comedy and fun is checked at the door and the real story begins to unfold. Seele and Gendo's true plans begin to unveil and our characters start thier long, painfull spiral into the blackness. But trust me, it gets worse though; just wait for Manga's release of The End of Evangelion this summer and you'll see what I mean.
