The 2004 broadcast series Samurai 7 borrows the premise of Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai (1954): driven to desperation by bandits who steal their crops, the inhabitants of a small village try to hire unemployed samurai to defend them. With nothing to offer as wages but their precious rice, the villagers send a delegation to a nearby town to recruit warriors poor enough to accept the dishonor of working for peasants. Samurai 7 moves the story into the future: the bandits and some of the samurai are robots. The village delegation consists of "water priestess" Kirara, her loud-mouthed little sister Komachi, and diligent Rikichi. In the first four episodes, they find four samurai willing to work for them: grim Kambei, eager Katsushiro, street performer Gorobei, and blustering mecha Kikuchiyo. But Kirara's beauty attracts the effete son of a wealthy merchant, adding a lot of predictable complications. Seven Samurai is widely recognized as a masterpiece of international cinema; Samurai 7 is a lavish (it cost a reported 32,500,000--nearly $300,000--per episode, an extremely high price by Japanese standards) but derivative sci-fi saga that should have been allowed to stand on its own limited merits. This is a great anime series loosely based on Akira Kurosawa's epic film Seven Samurai, with some sci-fi elements added to it.
The limited edition comes within the regular DVD plus 4 story books, one for each episode. All are secured within a big cardboard case. Note that the case is not an art box designed to hold the series. You will get a separate case for the limited edition of each volume.

Samurai 7 is a anime based on Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai (1954) based in a futuristic world. The villages and cities are recovering from a massive war. The Samurai are now jobless and many have become bandits. But not just normal bandits. They have become Nobuseri bandits, machines who use to be men, Samurai who had their living cells replaced by iron and steel. And now they raid the towns for rice and, sometimes, women.
One of these villages have sent for Samurai, hungry warriors, willing to fight off for a meal of cooked rice each day. Titled Akira Kurosawa's Samurai 7, this anime does honor to one of the best Japanese movies of the 20th Century, if not one of the best movies of all time. The only flaw was the fact that the DVD held only four episodes. But the episodes were GREAT, each linked to the next, like one big story. Which it IS. None of the episodes are in a vaccum, they are all a chain of cause and effect. Not much in the way of extras, besides opening and closing songs, trailers and some character profiles.

Having heard much great things about this anime, I was disappointed to find it did not live up to it's reputation. It is only the first volume so I'm sure the story may improve over the course of the next few volumes, but as of the first volume I am left unimpressed. Sure the animation is nice, but animation quality alone can't make up for flat boring characters. The first volume had a pervasive sense of making up for lack of substance with stylish character designs and silly fight scenes. Too much time spent on making the show 'cool' instead of making the story interesting to follow left me cold and uninterested.
