The adventures of Ash, Misty, Brock, and Pikachu veer toward the supernatural in this set of three episodes of the popular Pokemon series. In "The Ghost of Maiden's Peak," the perennially lonely Brock--and James of the evil but inept Team Rocket--find themselves smitten with the ghost of a beautiful girl who died 2,000 years ago. Ash learns an important lesson about self-sacrifice and concern for others when he gives up the first Pokemon he raised and trained in "Bye Bye Butterfree." Despite the best efforts of Team Rocket, Butterfree finds a mate and departs with her for their nesting grounds, giving this story an uncharacteristically downbeat ending. After being lost in the woods for the umpteenth time, our heroes reach Saffron City only to discover it's a very strange place in "Abra and the Psychic Showdown." They're rescued from their initial run-in with Team Rocket by Sabrina, a pretty little girl with mysterious psychic powers. The quartet learns that Sabrina can be an unreliable ally--and an unpredictable opponent. This cliffhanger ends with Ash, Misty, Brock, and Pikachu setting out for nearby Lavender Village to capture a ghost Pokemon to use against Abra, Sabrina's psychic Pokemon. --Charles Solomon

5 out of 5 stars POKEMON IS BETTER THAN EVERYONE   October 25, 1999

This is the best Pokemon Tape of summer vacation. I'm a huge Pokemon fan. The episodes I saw were cool and funny. The funniest part is when Pikachu jumps on Team Rocket's helicopter and shocks away, while Team Rocket inside yells "IT CAN SHOCK US! IT CAN SHOCK US!" Really funny. In "Abra and the Psychic Showdown", we meet Sabrina for the first time, who's gone rampant. Ash loses big time against her Kadabra, gets shrunk down to minature size in her toybox but escapes. My favorite episode so far, but what's up with the evil doll that resembles young Sabrina? In my opinion, I think that the animators were going a little too far with the evil doll(you'll see what I mean when you watch). Still, I recommend this tape to any Pokemon fan.

This is a really great show! I only wish that they do show what happens to Sabrina, and how ash is going to defeat her and Abbra.I would also like to know what the jogger in the show meant about Ash being "the one" to save Sabrina. What is Sabrina's past history?

4 out of 5 stars Good, but NOT FOR EVERYONE!   January 26, 2000

I wanted to write a review to warn people: This is a very good tape, with lots of good comic moments (such as Ash, Misty, and Brock reciting the Team Rocket poem). But, this tape has some CREEPY supernatural elements that are unsuitable for younger children or others who are easily scared.

3 out of 5 stars So Long Butterfree   April 29, 2000

My favorite episode in this video is Bye Bye Butterfree. It's sad because butterfree finds a mate and goes. The mate it finds is pink. Most Butterfrees are blue. The best part is when Ash is thinking of his old memories of when he caught Caterpie.I hope you'll watch it.
