Edward and Alphonse Elric learn difficult lessons that affect their perceptions of themselves and their profession as Fullmetal Alchemist continues. They learn that the murderous vendetta Scar is conducting against State Alchemists grew out of the rebellion of Ishbal. They learn that Dr. Marcoh created an imperfect version of the Philosopher's Stone that the State military used to perpetrate a terrible massacre in Ishbal. When they are injured by Scar, Ed and Al learn to accept the aid of the gargantuan Alex Louis Armstrong. Ultimately, the brothers learn how necessary they are to each other. The serious moments are balanced against broad comedy: Al finds himself reduced to the status of baggage; Ed remains as hot-tempered as ever. While the Elric brothers struggle through their adventures, the mysterious figures of Lust, Envy, and Gluttony remain in the background, trying to control events. (Rated TV PG: violence, minor risque humor, alcohol and tobacco use) --Charles Solomon

5 out of 5 stars This is an amazing anime series. *no spoilers*   July 2, 2005

Funimation has done a great job with the dub and done very little censoring.

The voice actors are fabulous, something that has not happened too often with dubbed anime.

The packaging is GREAT! I love the information books that come with the DVD. They have helped me addict MANY more people to the LOVE that is Fullmetal Alchemist.

I'm not going to give a plot summary, because you can get it on the [adult swim] page, or any other anime page...that and Episode Spoilers STINK!

The vaguely European/German/Russian setting is great, the soundtrack recorded by the Moscow Symphony Orchestra is VERY moving...the motif of Bratja just breaks my heart. (I am VERY glad that I got the Volume 1 boxed set combo with tin/soundtrack.)

I've even gotten the redneck neighbor and my 70 year old father interested in this stuff...it has mass apeal and excellent production values. They were VERY careful about plot holes and continuity.

Re-watch these a LOT and watch with sub-titles as well. You will get many subtle details/hints that they drop throughout the series in backgrounds, street signs...seemingly non-important things. Just those small details that change it from a "kids' cartoon" to something deeper and much more enjoyable for the thinking person.

*Although now it has me googling old alchemists/physicists.*

5 out of 5 stars The Fall of Ishbal   May 20, 2005

After Edward Elric returns to his military base, he begins to inquire about an ex-state Alchemist named "Marcoh." The brigadire General told Ed that Marcoh was a "filthy deserter."

When Ed finally meets Dr. Marcoh, he finds what he was looking for for three years: The Philosopher's Stone. And Yet, Ed doesn't take it.

---It also turned out a Cereal killer who vowed to kill all state alchemists is after Edward Elric. When Ed asked Marcoh about him, he is told that the killer is from Ishbal, a country which was victimized by state-alchemists. And that was the reason why the cereal-killer held a grudge against them.

In episode 15, Ed tells Scar, the killer to take his life to make up for his brother's. Scar tells Ed that he vowed not to hurt his brother, Alphonse.

Just when Scar was about to kill Ed, Marcoh showed up with his Philosopher's Stone. Scars markings on his arm reacted to it and he was temporarily unable to murder anyone.

I give Fullmetal 5 stars. It deserves more, but oh well. Even if you don't like Anime, Fullmetal may be an exeption.

5 out of 5 stars FMA At it's best (may contain Spoilers)   June 4, 2005

Fullmetal is an amazingly amazing series and it starts getting good around this DVD. i saw the series on Cartoon Network and bought the DVD's in Japanese with subtitles because it's so good. I did still continue to watch on Cartoon Network and wasn't shocked when they started the series over again. they did that with Yu Yu Hakusho and that p*sted me off alot too. I heard that the series ends different from the still continuing manga but I thought this series wraps up wonderfully, espesialy with the movie being released in Japan in Summer 2005. In this DVD itself Edowado meets Dr. marcoh, a depressed maker of the Philosepher's stone. He has a fake one with him but Ed decides not to take it. Scar appears and kills Basuke Gran which is very important to the series. Later in other DVD's, Marcoh's notes tell the Elrics what the Philosepher stone is made of (Come on, guess! It's easy!) and helps Maes Hughes figure out the evil dudes' (you know, the girl with the stretchy fingers, fat dude, and Transformer girl?)plan. These episodes end the 1st season and starts the 2nd. Great starting theme for the 2nd season "Ready Steady Go" by L'arc en ciel (French for rainbow). Anyway, Great series so buy this darn DVD and buy the others too! I'm the Animekid and I know Anime! :)
